FHI 360 is saddened by the sudden passing of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, a true champion for women’s rights and reproductive health.

Dr. Osotimehin, a highly respected physician and expert on public health, was a remarkable leader who stood up for girls and women across the world. FHI 360 worked in close partnership with Dr. Osotimehin during his tenure with UNFPA and for many years prior, when he served as Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), which coordinates HIV and AIDS work in Nigeria. Most recently, Dr. Osotimehin was the keynote speaker at FHI 360’s Family Planning +Social Good event at the 2013 International Conference on Family Planning, where he spoke eloquently about his role in working with African leaders to expand access to contraception for women in Africa and the importance of family planning to the health and well-being of the entire family.

“Professor Osotimehin was a great leader who fought for the reproductive health of women and girls. While in NACA, he championed the course of decentralization of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and antiretroviral therapy to primary health care levels in Nigeria. He also pushed for donor coordination and harmonization of aid for HIV services to ensure standardization across sites, irrespective of source of donor funding to the health facility,” said Robert Chiegil, FHI 360’s Country Director in Nigeria.

FHI 360 extends our condolences to Dr. Osotimehin’s family, friends and colleagues around the world.
