PMI/CDC team inspects FHI360 led MAPS project supported facilities in Oyo State. (Commends MAPS team for its leadership role in enhancing data quality and improved service delivery for malaria control interventions)
The Nigeria FHI360/MAPS management team has been commended for applying managerial and leadership qualities to enhance the quality of data and improved service delivery on malaria interventions in PMI/USAID supported facilities in Oyo State, South West Nigeria.
The commendation was given recently by the visiting CDC team lead Dr Peter McElroy, program implementation unit chief, CDC team head, Atlanta Georgia, USA and accompanied by Dr Richard Niska, Resident Advisor, Malaria CDC, Abuja, Nigeria.
Five facilities were visited out of which four are supported by PMI (PHC Alakia, PHC Molete, Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital, Our Lady of Apostle Catholic Hospital) and one was a Global Fund (GF) supported site (Jericho Specialist Hospital).
Dr Peter McElroy met with key personnel representing the primary and secondary health care services; Dr K. Soyinka, Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Egbeda LGA, and Dr Adeyanju, the Consultant- in- charge, Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital (AMTH), Ibadan. At both levels of care, the improvement in malaria prevention services through the routine distribution of LLIN to pregnant women attending antenatal care and children receiving measles vaccine was highlighted while pregnant women are protected with intermittent preventive therapy with the use of PMI provided drugs.
The high point of Dr McElroy was the functional health management information system and the electronic platform which is used to manage it through PMI support; the District Health Information Software (DHIS2) in addition to the high quality of malaria services. He saw health facility data reported timely, malaria data displayed on the walls of facilities and used for decision making. He tasked the team to produce a documentation of the process that led to such a system in Nigeria.
The three days visit from 8-10 December, 2015, was coordinated by Pharmacist Oluwole Adeusi, MAPS Chief of Party, Dr Bolatito Aiyenigba, Deputy Chief of Party/Implementation Director and Dr Adebola Karim Mohammed, MAPS Coordinator, Oyo State.
